An Oredo Magistrates’ Court in Benin, Edo State on Wednesday sentenced a teenager, Shegun Olamide, to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour for stealing a N5,000 cell phone.


The Magistrate, P.E Foy-Yamah, sentenced Olamide, 18, after he pleaded guilty to a charge of theft and begged the court for mercy.

The Prosecutor, Inspector Ada Johnbull, told the court that the accused committed the offence on October 21 at about 4pm in Benin City.

Johnbull said the accused stole the N5,000 handset from one Amen Kingsley.

He said the offence contravened Section 390 of the Criminal Code.

  2. These are part of the reasons why our judges and judicial council should be checked. Haba ! Just 5k fone and our dear politicians are busy embezzling national treasures, yet this dude is doing 365/6 days in kuje, that judge no get the fear of God.

  3. That boy should have know the norm of his dear country, no place for common criminals here. After his 12 months behind bars, he should endeavour to join politics so as to fraudulently acquire all the wealth he desires. Then, he will have enough to pay the judges 'as usual' and others who can put him behind bars.
    And then everyone will live happily ever after.
    Nonesense!! They are swift at giving judgement in cases like this.
    Shaking my head for our judicial system.
