Twenty nine constituents from Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in Kano state have dragged the Speaker, House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, to court over suspension of their member, Alhaji Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa.

Addressing a press conference in Kano on Friday at NUJ secretariat, Counsel to the plaintiff’s, Mr. Bashir Muqaddam, said the court had fixed December 20, 2016 for mentioning.

Barrister Muqaddam said the plaintiffs were challenging the legality of the suspension, saying Jibrin’s suspension was political witch-hunt.

“The plaintiffs wanted a court interpretation on whether the House of Representatives had power to suspend its member for 180 days. Constitutionally, the number of days prescribed to the lower chamber regarding suspension is only 14 days,” he averred.

He argued that the suspended lawmaker had constitutional right to express his opinion on anything that affects the country.

Mr. Muqaddam said Kofa was suspended because he exposed some principal officers in the lower chamber who tempered with 2016 budget.

Also parties in the suit filed before a Federal High court ll in Kano, are Clerk of the House of Representatives and the House of Representatives respectively.
