Sikira kept on checking her watch and watching the entrance of the petrol station for any sign of Julia. It was almost 1:00pm and she was getting nervous. The supervisor had not come around yet but she was certain it won’t take long before he shows his ugly face around.
Sikira particularly detested the sight of the supervisor after he had asked her to sleep with him so he can put in a word to the manager on her behalf to get an increment in her salary. She had lied to him that she was engaged in a serious relationship and would soon tie the knot and so she couldn’t cheat on her fiancé. Deep within her heart, she knew she was deceiving herself.
The person she referred to as her fiancé was a man who she met at the local restaurant some few years ago. Sikira, fell haplessly in love with him at first sight for he appeared like one who was responsible owing to his dressing, in a well starched shirt and black Chinos. She opened up her heart and legs for him and then he became an integral part of her. He moved into her house where he has been living for the past two years. Theirs was a parasitic relationship.
Sikira fed him, gave him pocket money and gave him sex anytime he wanted. In return, he beats her up at the slightest provocation, leaves the house for days until she calls him and begs him to return home. She couldn’t do without him and she didn’t know why even with her boyfriend’s maltreatment she couldn’t bringing herself to sleeping with the ugly faced supervisor; his potty belly was her greatest turn off and his ill spoken English didn’t help matters but he spoke it anywhere not minding the blunders he was making; he had mastery in malapropism.
Sikira: “I no fit imagine myself say I sleep with supervisor oo”
She had said to Julia during one their conversations, Julia blared into boisterous cackling,
Sikira: “Where we wan even start from with e big belly! An e English sef no pure! E bi like rotten dead body”
Julia couldn’t hold her breathe.
Sikira picked up her phone and dailed Julia’s number, it rang four times and there was no response.
Sikira: (soliloquy) “See me see wahala o, this stupid girl wey no allow me sleep no gree pick my call again. Maybe she and her sugar daddy don start to celebrate their honeymoon forget me here. Wetin I want tell oga Supervisor or even manager now? My own garri no go trowey because of her o, after all when the man marry her she go soon leave this work.”
The loud ringtone of her four years old Nokia C4 startled her. She dipped her hand in her waist bag to bring it out when she saw the mean looking supervisor walking in briskly in his usual uncharacteristic manner. He was always in a hurry as if he was afraid someone or something will catch up with him if he doesn’t hurry. She quickly ignored the phone as she knew it was against the rule of the petrol station to pick calls while on duty especially when attending to a customer as she was doing. The supervisor went into the office and came out after a while, he walked up to her when he saw that she no longer had any customer to attend to.
Sikira: “Ogah Supervisor, good moni, sir.”
Supervisor: “Ehen, Morning. What are you does fo here, are you not supposed to be in night shift?”
He caressed his pot belly that had turned the big shirt into body fitted with raised shoulders; she holds her breathe so as to control the laughter surging from within.
Sikira: “Yes, na night shift I dey. Na Julia dey here, she go toilet.”
Supervisor’s phone rings, he checks the phone and picks up.
Supervisor: “Good morning, manager. I was dey at your office and it was locked. One of the gossip in the pretention of attendants here say you are yet to dey. Hope all is well,ba?”
Manager: “all is well, I will soon be there, I am attending to a family matter. Can you give your phone to attendant Julia? I need to send her on an urgent errand and she is not picking her calls. I guess she is busy selling petrol.”
Supervisor: “Oh, Julia is in the toilet but Sikira is stand for her.”
Manager: “Give the phone to Sikira.”
Supervisor hands Sikira the phone with a warning;
Supervisor: “Handle that phone with carefulness because your 12months salary plus all the money your grandpapa made during his lifetime can’t buy the phone. “
Sikira: “Hello, ogah manager, good moni, sir!”
Manager: “Sikira, what is Julia doing in the toilet and how long has she been there?”
Sikira: “Ogah, e never tey wey she eat hot beans and hot akamu, na im she start dey purge. She go soon commot.”
Manager: “Why haven’t you gone home after your night shift?”
Sikira: “I been dey house, na so I con remember say I forget my flask wey I take eat for store room. I no want make e smell, that na why I come back to carry am go wash. Na so I jam Julia dey run go toilet, I come tanda for her pump in case customer come buy fuel.”
Manager: “Tell her to call me as soon as she gets back if she still wants her job because she is not picking my calls.”
Sikira: “Okay sah, I go tell her. Her phone no good, e no dey ring out that’s why she no pick.”
Manager: “Whatever. I will be expecting her call in a few minutes.”
The supervisor collected his phone back with the warning that Julia must be in her duty post by the time he returns in less than ten minutes.
Sikira is thrown into deep thoughts. She knows she could no longer cover up for Julia for long. She picked up her phone to dial Julia’s number when she saw 21 missed calls from an unknown number. She heaved a sigh of relief.
Sikira: “Ah! 21 missed calls? I sure say na Julia dey use her husband to number call me.”
She was about flashing the number when a call from the same number came in.
Sikira: “Iyawo Chief, you buy another sim card? You don leave work be that…?”
Caller (Neighbor): “Na me, Iya Muniru for your compound. Run come o, your errn…husband, no, your boyfriend and your mama wey come from village this morning dey fight.”
Sikira: “You say wetin? My mama dey Nyanya? How she take get my address? Why Ken dey fight my mama?” She asked in a shaky voice
Neighbor: “Na who wan answer you all those questions? Anyway, your mother’s sister brought your mother to your house this morning. She opened your door and met your boyfriend naked on top another woman dey knack. Na so your boyfriend begin shout say why your mama sister go carry her come your house dey intrude into his privacy. Na so serious fight take start. Even sef, your boyfriend vex hit your television for ground break am.”
Sikira: “Ken dey sleep with another woman? Who be the girl?” she was totally colored up and obviously angry as she asked breathlessly
Neighbor: “The girl carry one of your wrapper tie run as fight start o. If you want meet your mama alive, run come now now because Ken eyes dey red like person wey smoke and your mother doesn’t want to leave.”
Tears clouded Sikira’s eyes, she looked visibly scared. She tried keeping back the tears but was at a crossroad, she didn’t know if she should rush home to save her mother and betray her 8years of friendship with Julia or she should save her friend and leave her mother who has been her lifelong backbone in the hands of her heartless lover.
