The Brit was due to take on the big-serving Canadian, the man he defeated earlier this year in the Wimbledon final, but the 25-year-old was forced to pull out after he tore his right quad.

Murray will now face John Isner in Sunday’s showpiece after the giant American defeated Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-3.

Novak Djokovic needed to reach the final to retain the top spot but lost 6-4 7-6 (7-2) to Cilic in the quarter-finals.

Murray has enjoyed a spectacularly successful season, claiming his second Wimbledon title and Olympic gold back in the summer.

The 29-year-old already has seven titles under his belt this year and will be an odds-on favourite to add another trophy to his collection in the French capital on Sunday.

Despite such an awesome achievement, Murray was keen to play down the significance of being ranked the best male player on the planet earlier this week.

‘My goal isn’t to get to number one this year. I was looking at the beginning of next year as the chance to do it. If it happens this week, great,’ he said.

‘I’m happy with the way I’m playing just now. It’s been a great few months for me. I’ll try to finish this week as best I can.’
