Angry youths in Awajir, Konshisha local government area in Benue state have set Awajir Police station ablaze .


Their action followed the brutal killing of an motorcycle rider by a police man on stop and search duty .

The youths alleged that the Okada rider who is their member was stopped by a policeman who also demanded fifty naira (N50) from him.

But the Okada rider turned down the request and as he made his way to leave the policeman who was half drunk opened fire and killed him on the spot.

Youths in the area mobilized and chased every policeman in Awajir town before setting the police station ablaze .

The Police Public Relation Officer ( PPRO) Moses Yamu, a DSP , told newsmen that the safer highways police patrol officer stopped on Aliade – Awajir road to settle a quarrel between Revenue officers and a stationery lorry .

However, a criminal attempted to snatch the riffle of an Inspector who was the leader of the team, while they were struggling there was an accidental discharge which hit another young man who had nothing to do with the altercation .

The PPRO stated that it was at this juncture that the youths in Awajir mobilized and set ablaze the police station in the area, they also went to the police camp and burnt down a vehicle belonging to a policeman .

DSP Yamu also said they blocked the highway and robbed travelers until Gboko Area commander mobilized and cleared the highway .
