The 46-year-old is alleged to have invested in two partnerships set up by Ingenious, an investment firm with a shady reputation.

Southgate joined back in 2004 while he was still a player, and is one of a number of high-profile footballers to have been involved with the company.

According to the Daily Mirror, Ingenious owes £620million to HM Revenue and Customs and is being chased up for this unpaid bill.

David Beckham and Gary Lineker have also been involved with the company, which was set up to help boost the British film industry.

The FA have so far refused to comment on the story, with a spokesperson saying: ‘This is a private matter.’
