England are without a permanent boss after Allardyce’s stint came to an end just 67 days into the job. The nation’s under-21 coach Gareth Southgate has been tasked with leading the Three Lions in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Malta, Slovenia and Scotland.

“I think that he [Wenger] would be an excellent choice for the English,” Overmars said at the ASPIRE4SPORT event, in quotes reported by the Daily Express.

“Maybe it’s time for him, if he has the energy for it.”

Overmars was signed by Wenger in 1997, and went on to play 142 games, scoring 41 goals for the Gunners. He helped the North Londoners to a Premier League and FA Cup Double in the 1997-98 season.

The search for a new manager is on the top of the England Football Association’s agenda, with names like Bournemouth’s Eddie Howe and Wenger suggested as possible candidates.

Wenger, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has hinted at the possibility of taking up the role.
