Arsenal star Per Mertesacker looks set to leave the Emirates at the end of the season and Manchester United great Rio Ferdinand has had his say on the defender.

Rio Ferdinand: This Arsenal star was NEVER right for the Premier League

Reports suggest two of Mertesacker’s former teams, Werder Bremen and Hannover 96, are keen on re-signing the 32-year-old when his contract expires next summer.

Despite becoming a fan favourite during his 208 appearances for the Gunners, Ferdinand believes the German World Cup winner was never the right fit for the Premier League.

Ferdinand, however, believes Arsene Wenger finally has the perfect back-four with Laurent Koscielny and summer signing Shkodran Mustafi forming an immediate partnership in central defence.

‘Laurent Koscielny has been one of the most consistent defenders for the last few seasons and has found a great partner in summer signing Shkodran Mustafi,’ Ferdinand wrote in his Evening Standard column

‘I didn’t think Per Mertesacker was the right fit for Koscielny, Arsenal or this League.

‘Mertesacker is a very good player and it’s unfortunate that he got an injury before the start of the season, but I think he may be more suited to other divisions in Europe.’
