The Gunners scored a late equaliser against Manchester United on Saturday to sneak away from Old Trafford with an undeserved point, with substitute Olivier Giroud rising in the 89th minute to head past David De Gea.

The French striker was one of three internationals who came on as Wenger tried to turn things around and it is that quality on the bench that makes the Arsenal manager believe his side are so dangerous late in games.

Asked if he could remember having so much choice in personnel, Wenger replied: ‘Never’.

He continued: ‘Maybe a few years ago but I think we have the quality and the spirit on the bench. The two together makes us remarkably dangerous until the last minute. Since the start of the season, look at the number of goals we’ve scored in the final five minutes. That is not a coincidence.’

Three times in the Premier League this season Arsenal have scored crucial late goals. In addition to Giroud’s intervention at Old Trafford, Laurent Koscielny scored an injury time winner at Burnley and earlier in the season Santi Cazorla scored from the spot at the death as Arsenal beat Southampton 2-1 at the Emirates.

  1. So true, might not be coincidence. However, Wenger should up his game and kill the game early enough in order to avoid late minute pressure. You may not salvage the situation all the time.
