The 29-year-old was playing his first tournament since climbing to the summit of the rankings after passing Novak Djokovic.

It wasn’t necessarily the most fluent performance from the Brit but he still had enough to see off the big-serving world No. 7 on Monday night at the O2.

While Murray was expected to win, Cilic did win the pair’s last meeting in Cincinnati earlier this year and had emerged victorious in two of their previous four encounters.

But there were no such problems for Murray on this occasion as he won 6-3 6-2.

Murray almost got off to a nightmare start as he faced two break points against the Croat in the opening game, but as he’s done so often this year, he dug deep to hold before breaking Cilic immediately after.

Cilic would not lie down and replied instantly to break Murray but continued to struggle on his own serve, which is such a potent weapon, and the Scot moved into a 4-1 lead.

Both men finally found some rhythm on their serves but Murray held on to take the opening set 6-3.

Cilic’s serve gave way midway through the second, with Murray breaking him twice in quick succession, and the Croat couldn’t recover.

Earlier in Group John McEnroe, Kei Nishikori beat Stan Wawrinka 6-2 6-3.
