Barely hours after the Senate passed a favorable resolution asking Telecommunications Service Providers to stop the planned upward review in data tariffs, the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has announced the immediate suspension of the new tariff for data services by mobile telecoms operators.

Some telecoms service providers had in an apparent rush to increase tariffs, issued statements to subscribers though customised Short Messaging Services, SMS, intimating them of the imminent plans to increase tariffs on all mobile data purchased, with effect from Thursday, 1st December, 2016.

According to the service providers, the development was not unconnected with the new guidelines by the regulating agency of the government, the NCC.

Information available to newsmen says the NCC is taking the decision to allow for further consultations with relevant agencies and stakeholders, as directed by the Upper Legislative Chamber.
