The Chelsea midfielder has been linked with a move to Serie A, having featured just four times in the Premier League under Antonio Conte this season.

The Spaniard had been linked with a switch to AC Milan to replace Montolivo, who is sidelined for six months with a knee injury, but Montella has no plans to sign him.

‘We need a player with Montolivo’s characteristics, someone who knows how to play in a midfield of two,’ Montella told Corriere della Sera.

‘Fabregas does not have these characteristics.

‘I think Montolivo is nearly irreplaceable. He is important both on the pitch and in the dressing room. It’s an even bigger loss than people think.’
