Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas has cited ‘personal reasons’ for opting not to attend Tuesday’s game against England as a guest of the Spanish Football Federation, according to Sport.


The former Arsenal captain has endured a difficult season thus far under new Chelsea boss Antonio Conte and has started just a solitary Premier League game – the disastrous 3-0 defeat against his former club at the Emirates Stadium – with his current side thriving in his absence.

Fabregas’ domestic troubles have been mirrored at international, where new incumbent Julen Lopetegui has also deemed the 29-year-old to be surplus to requirements.

Despite his absence from the squad, the Spanish Federation have invited Fabregas and a clutch of English-based players including the likes of Santi Cazorla, Pedro and Adrian to attend tonight’s glamour friendly at Wembley.

While the Arsenal and West Ham duo are reported to have accepted the invitation, Fabregas will not be watching on from the stands.
