Argentina are the 2017 Davis Cup winners for the first time in their history after Juan Martin del Potro inspired an incredible comeback for his country against Croatia in the final.

Croatia went down 3-2 on the final day despite leading 2-1 at the start of play.

It was down to Croatia’s Ivo Karlovic to stop the tide against his side in the final match, but he was beaten in superb fashion by Federico Delbonis 3-6 4-6 2-6.

Argentina’s comeback is just the seventh time in Davis Cup history that a country has come from 2-1 down to become champions.

Earlier Del Potro pulled off an incredible comeback to send the match to a deciding rubber.

He was two sets down to Marin Cilic yet managed to claw the match back. The mammoth contest eventually ended 6-7 (4-7), 2-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-3.

Croatia, seeking their second Davis Cup title after victory in 2005, took a 2-1 lead on Saturday thanks to a thrilling 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 win for Cilic and Ivan Dodig over Del Potro and Leonardo Mayer.

The victory for Argentina ends a long history of Davis Cup heartbreak that had seen them finish runners up four times before victory here over Croatia.
