The 36-year-old is close to joining Jurgen Klopp’s coaching staff at his boyhood club as he looks to take his first steps into management.

Gerrard is still doing his Uefa A licence under the guidance of Liverpool staff and the lure of returning to the club in a full-time role convinced him to hang up his boots, according to the Telegraph.

Talks are ongoing to work out exactly what his role will be but he is set to join the academy in some form.
