Drogba, 38, refused to play rather than come off the bench in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Toronto FC in Montreal’s penultimate regular season game, and the striker was not listed in Mauro Biello’s matchday squad.

Impact president Joey Saputo revealed that the former Chelsea and Ivory Coast star had resolved the situation with the club, but MLS still fined him for his behaviour.

“Consistent with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Drogba has been fined an undisclosed amount for his failure to appear for the Montreal Impact’s match against Toronto FC on October 16,” the MLS said in a statement.

In a separate ruling, New York City FC player Diego Martinez was also fined for swearing at a DC United ballboy on Sunday.

Martinez had been accused of using an anti-gay slur, but MLS revealed in a statement: “Based on the investigation and the testimony of multiple witnesses, MLS did not corroborate the report that the player used a homophobic slur. The League did find, however, that the player directed an obscenity towards a D.C. United ball kid and the player has been fined an undisclosed amount for this misconduct.”
