It was gathered that some of the officials were arrested in connection with the N1.2 billion that was missing at the cabinet office over the Arugungu Fishing Festival contract.

A source in the state said the EFCC officials were invited to investigate the missing money and to bring sanity into the system.

Speaking on the issue, Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Alhaji Umar Babale, denied the coming of the EFCC into the state.

He spoke yesterday while fielding questions from newsmen in his office.

He said: “To the best of my knowledge and in my capacity as the SSG, I am not aware of the presence of the EFCC in the state.

“If EFCC visited Kebbi State, I am supposed to be in the know, people are just carrying rumours around, none of the government officials were picked, it was baseless and untrue,” he added.

But he reprimanded the 21 local governments’ directors of personnel and local government treasurers, who were accused of corruption, saying they would face the penalty of their action.

He said fighting corruption was one of the priorities of the administration. He also said that the ongoing staff verification exercise in the state was not aimed at witch-hunting anybody, but to restructure the local government system in the state.
