Kalu was in the room with headache; tears seeped down his cheeks met by phlegm that found its way out of the nostrils. He was crying like a baby. Precious held him in her arms,
Precious: “Kalu, you can’t continue like this. See the girl who has kept you in this situation has moved on with her life why not same do!”
Kalu: “I just want to die!!! I cannot live without her. I just want to die oooo!”
Precious: “quit talking this way,please.”
Kalu was still crying. There was hardly anything Precious could do. Her best was being there for me and she did just that. A lady let out a shrill that shook the spine of Precious and Kalu had to pause. What was happening? An angry voice accompanied the shrill. Hope it wasn’t Mama Chinedu and Iya Kpati going back to their old habit.
Caro sat down putting Tanko’s big shirt with nothing underneath. Kalu’s thought had crossed her mind,
Caro: “Kalu, I’m sorry! I pray you find someone that truly deserves you!”
Tanko came from behind with two cups of juice and kissed her ear. Interrupting her thought,
Tanko: “What’s moi perle thinking of?”
Caro who had received the cup with kiss,
Caro: “Nothing! Nothing!”
Tanko sat by her smothering her with kisses,
Tanko: “I’ve made reservations for us at Le Meurice, one of the finest hotels in Paris!” he said with pride.
Caro jumped on him screaming,
Caro: “You’re the most romantic man in the world!”
That was one of the reasons why she had to dump Kalu for Tanko, she thought. Tanko could give her the world but what was Kalu going to give? He only could feed her poverty as he’d done all those times they were together. It wasn’t her fault really. After Kalu didn’t like the way poverty had become his pomade. Was she supposed to live in abject poverty for the rest of her life?, “I have suffered since birth. It wouldn’t be fair if I die thay way!” she thought. One of the reasons why Caro killed her guilt and decided to start an affair with Tanko was because of Ade, the person in charge of models. He was her direct boss. With him she was always at fault but since she was seeing the overall boss life became pleasurable.
She drew Tanko’s lips closer to hers and they started kissing. Like a man who knows how to press the right button, he turned her on and they were at it. It had always being like that for them. Little talk, little laughter then majority of the time was for sex. They had sex anywhere even at work.
Precious: “I’ll be right back. Rest your head please!” she dashed out to see what was happening.
It was Iya Kpati that was the reason behind the turmoil. She was fighting with the girl her husband had impregnated,
Iya Kpati: “You must commoting for my house today, Tereza abi ki lo ruko ye!” the girl got away from Iya Kpati’s grasp and ran to where Old Soja stood.
Theresa: “Go where? Dis na my husband house too!”
Mama Chinedu who was now stronger chimed in,
Mama Chinedu: “Husband snatcher come dey go oo!”she kept hitting the mouth as it evoked a mockery sound.
Theresa gawking at Mama Chinedu,
Theresa: “Wetin bi dis wan? See as you short like devil,” she was as tall as Iya Kpati but very slender with bulgy eyes that looked bigger than her body.
Mama Chinedu and Iya Kpati chased her together but she ran out of the gate,
Mama Chinedu: “Ijoit! Bascard! You fo stay na.We fo dat your razor mouth brush ground. See as e bi like dat stick wey dem dey use turn Amala!”Iya Kpati started crying,
Iya Kpati: “You see wetin Ojo iyaff cause eh? E making omo kekere tiriza to bi abusement me,eh?” Mama Chinedu led her to sit on a bench.
Mama Chinedu: “Ah-ah, my friend stop crying na! men useless. No mind dem! Na so I hear say Papa Chinedu dey folo wey Hausa geh. I cut em warning say if I hear say na truth I cut e tin!” she demonstrated with the movement of two of her fingers.
Iya Kpati: “Yeh! Mama Shinedu ore mi, you fit two, ehun, cut e tin?”
Mama Chinedu laughed,
Mama Chinedu: “No na!”
Iya Kpati : “Na fearing you put e body abi?”
Mama Chinedu nodded. Theresa ran into them with a stick but acting on impulse they gave way and she fell on the bench. They both pounced on her as she let out a scream.
Thereasa: “Help ooo! Witches wan kill me ooo!” throwing her legs in the air as Iya Kpati and Mama Chinedu were punching her,
Iya Kpati: “Holding the leg so I go siddon fo e body!”
Mama Chinedu: “Nooo! We no suppose kill em na! na just beat oo!”
Iya Kpati: “Ehen, is beast I beast em like that!”
Mama Chinedu: “Make we just beat em!”
They resumed with slaps and punches. No one separated them. Tenants were surprised that Iya Kpati and Mama Chinedu had become real friends.
Tanko had a crashing sound in the kitchen were Caro was doing the dishes. He rushed in.
Caro: “It was an accident!”
Tanko: “it was what?” he gave a very nasty slap that flung her to the ground he left ranting, “I told that cup was a gift from my late mother and you went ahead to break it calling it a mistake! I don’t take shits!”
She was sobbing. It was a thing Kalu would never do. There was a time out of carelessness she broke Kalu’s TV but instead of being vexed he made a joke out of it,
Kalu: “I’d deduct that from your bride price!”
Anger surge within her; she wasn’t mad at Tanko but herself!
Caro: “I miss you,Kalu!”
Question: “Was Caro paying for dumping Kalu? Would the slap bring her back to her senses? Was Kalu being stupid for crying?
