According to reports, the Federal Government has ordered an investigation into the alleged killing of six inmates of Oke Kura Prisons, Ilorin, Kwara State last Thursday.

The Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau, directed an an Intra-Ministerial Committee to work closely with the Nigeria Prisons’ management team with a view to unraveling the remote circumstances surrounding the incident.

This was to prevent a repeat of such in any of the nation’s penitentiary and to sanction any official found culpable, a statement on Monday in Abuja, by the Press Secretary to the minister, Osaigbovo Ehisienmen, said.

It said, “The minister has consistently maintained his stance on the need to adhere to the United Nation Minimum Standards for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Prison inmates, including condemned prisoners in line with the Mandela Rules.

“Findings overtime have shown that such riot involving condemned criminals has been as a result of frustration of being on death row for a period of 10yrs or more. Moreover, a prison that was built in 1914, with 121 inmates capacity now accommodating 417, is bound to create difficulties in management.”

The statement added that the government had embarked on reconstructing old prisons while also building new facilities in some locations.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has advised Nigerians to always report cases of misconduct by police personnel to the Public Complaint Rapid Response Unit.

Speaking at the re-branding of the unit at Wuse Market, Abuja, Idris explained that the unit was saddled with the responsibility of receiving and resolving all complaints of police professional misconduct emanating from policing activities and operations nationwide.

The IG, stated that the unit would work closely with the anti-corruption squad of the police, the X-squad unit by passing promptly, complaints against police officers and men across the country from the members of the public to the squad for immediate action.

He said, “In line with the change agenda of the FG and the “Change begins with me” campaign, the Nigeria Police Force under my leadership is ensuring police accountability to the Nigerian people by ensuring that all citizens and residents of the country have a unit through which all grievances against police actions and inactions are taken up and redressed.”

The IG also noted that the unit could be reached through seven platforms, including phone call, SMS, WhatsApp, Blackberry messenger, Twitter, Facebook and email.
