Welbeck has been on the sidelines since May when the England forward suffered cartilage damage to his right knee while playing for the Gunners against Manchester City.

It was thought that Welbeck would be ruled out for nine months but Wenger has announced that the 25-year-old should return sooner than first expected.

‘He’s ahead of schedule and he’ll be back in January,’ Wenger said at his Friday press conference.

‘It will take two months competition for him to get back to his best.’

The Frenchman also lifted the lid on injuries to Olivier Giroud and Aaron Ramsey and praised Arsenal’s medical staff for their work.

He added: ‘We’ve improved on muscular injuries tremendously over the last two or three years and hopefully we can continue that.’
