The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba n’Edo Uku Akpolopkolo, Oba Ewuare II, says he is committed to a peaceful Nigeria irrespective of religious and cultural differences.


Oba Ewuare II stated this yesterday evening during a special Durbar ceremony organised in his honour by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, at the Oba’s Palace in Benin City.

The monarch was crowned as the 40th Oba of Benin Kingdom on Thursday morning and received his staff of office from Governor Adams Oshiomhole at an elaborate ceremony held at Urho-Okpota hall.

No fewer than 10 different cultural troupes gathered at his palace to pay homage. The dance and cultural groups, including Durbar horse riders drawn from different parts of the country, rendered colourful performances to entertain Oba Ewuare II and his royal court.

Present at the event were top Benin chiefs and other dignitaries from within and outside the state.

Hundreds of residents thronged the palace to witness the event.

The Oba, who spoke through the Eribo of Benin Kingdom, Chief John Oviasogie, appreciated the Sultan for honouring him with the first ever Durbar ceremony held in Southern part of Nigeria, just as he expressed his gratitude to other traditional rulers who honoured him during his coronation.

“I am happy with all of you for coming to celebrate with me. I want you to know that I, the Sultan, Etsu Nupe and all other Emirs have arranged to work together for progress. We as traditional rulers have resolved to work together to ensure peace and progress in Nigeria despite our cultural and religious differences”.

Different horse riders drawn from Sokoto, Kano and Niger paid homage to the new king during the Durbar.
