Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has issued a firm warning to players he senses are celebrating reaching the top of the Premier League table so early on in the season.

The German tactician says he knows from his time at Borussia Dortmund that some players can get complacent before really achieving anything, and says he’ll simply drop anyone from the team if he thinks that’s happening.

Liverpool lost their place at the top of the table this weekend after drawing at Southampton, with Chelsea’s win at Middlesbrough lifting the Blues above them.

Klopp hopes he won’t have any problems with his players’ attitude after their fine performances so far, but reminded them to keep focused after dropping points on Saturday.

‘If somebody is a character and wants to celebrate position one in November then he will not play in December anymore, because I see it pretty quick,’ he said.

‘It is better to be in the number one spot one time than never in your life, but it is not really important in this moment. If you then celebrate this and don’t be professional any more then you have a problem.

‘These things usually don’t happen. The players are here in this situation because their character is really good – it is a long way to get here.

‘It is not like they are surprised about success whether it is individual or as a team. They had successes of being the best player at Southampton, Schalke, Sunderland or other teams. This is success in itself.’

  1. I can also see that complacency is already setting into Liverpool play! They better keep playing as if theyre still in the 8th position!
