Emre Can has said Liverpool were slightly unfortunate to come away with just a point in Monday night’s goalless draw with Manchester United at Anfield.

Both sides were restricted to few clear-cut chances in a tight Premier League encounter before the contest appeared to come into life after the half-time break.

Can, who made his first league start of the season against United, had a low shot that was well parried by goalkeeper David De Gea before the United No. 1 produced a stunning save to deny Philippe Coutinho from long range.

“I think we deserved more and deserved to win the game, because we had the better chances and played better,” Can told the club’s official website.

“It wasn’t our best game but we played better than Manchester United, I think, and deserved to win. We didn’t keep the ball too well. The game was too hectic.

“In the second half, we did a little bit better and we had the better chances. They have a very good goalkeeper, of course, and he made two good saves.

“It’s always a big derby against Manchester United and that’s maybe why. It was too hectic in the game and we have to do better in the next game. We will learn from it.”

Can played the entire 90 minutes for the Reds on Monday night after he was handed a start due to fitness issues with Georginio Wijnaldum and Adam Lallana.

It was the 22-year-old’s first full game since May 18 and he is hoping to build upon it throughout the rest of the campaign.

“I was very happy to start,” Can added. “My last 90 minutes was the Europa League final last season, a long time ago.

“I have to get fitness back and get my confidence back. I’m looking forward to that. With game time, I will get there.”
