Liverpool are planning a £40 million move for Southampton duo Virgil van Dijk and Sam McQueen, according to reports.

The Sun claims that Jurgen Klopp wants to strengthen his defence in the January transfer window and has been impressed by the Dutchman’s performances this season.

The 25-year-old was signed in a £13 million deal from Celtic last year, while in August he signed a new six-year contract with the Saints after a strong first season at the club.

Klopp also reportedly has his eye on McQueen as a solution for his left-back area at Anfield.

The 21-year-old has made only three Premier League appearances and could be available on a free transfer next summer as his contract expires at the end of the season.

Klopp is currently playing James Milner at left-back, with Alberto Moreno having fallen out of favour.
