The Real Madrid forward, 31, came directly up against the left-back on a number of occasions for Manchester United and Portugal.

Cole, 35, was one of the few defenders to have some joy against the winger and famously nullified him during England’s 0-0 draw with Portugal at the 2006 World Cup.

Ronaldo’s often marked by two men in matches but Cole was capable of going toe-to-toe with the Real Madrid ace and he’s admitted he the left-back is the toughest he’s ever faced.

‘Over the years I had some great battles with Ashley Cole – he doesn’t give you a second to breathe,’ said Ronaldo.

‘He was such a tenacious player, quick, tough in the tackle – when he was at his peak. You knew it would never be an easy game.’
