The Portuguese had a reputation for many years for being one of the best man-managers in the game, but has struggled in recent times to get his players on the same wavelength.

Mourinho’s extremely demanding approach saw him fall out with a number of big names at Chelsea last season, but he has supposedly tried a variety of methods to get through to Martial.

The 20-year-old striker has been a shadow of the player we saw at Old Trafford last season, and the United boss is understandably concerned about the player’s state of mind.

No longer oozing confidence or looking happy on the pitch, Mourinho has tried a gentle approach with the player, whilst sometimes putting big pressure on him to perform just before a game, according to the Daily Telegraph.

Nothing seems to be working so far, with the Frenchman scoring just twice so far this season, and perhaps still distracted by the recent split from his partner Samantha Jacquelinet.
