Jose Mourinho has explained that Michael Carrick cannot be picked for more of Manchester United’s games because of his age.

The 35-year-old started only his fifth game of the campaign on Sunday as United registered a 3-1 victory over Swansea City.

Carrick impressed at the base of midfield, with Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini playing further forward.

And while Mourinho was happy with Carrick’s performance, the Portuguese admits he will be unable to play the the former England international in more of United’s fixtures going forward.

‘I would love to play him every game but that is not possible,’ said the United manager.

‘Why? For the same reason that I cannot go to the gym every day any more.

‘He started today and he played very, very well.’
