According to reports, the Senator representing Delta Central senatorial district, Delta State, Ovie Omo-Agege, has alleged that the people of Niger Delta region were the ones making it difficult for President Muhammadu Buhari to come out with his blueprint for the development of the region.
Fielding questions from newsmen after a meeting with host community leaders and other stakeholders in Urhoboland at Ughelli, Omo-Agege said: “From the moment the man became President, there has been a concerted effort to deprive him of the opportunity to even show his hand on how he is going to develop the Niger Delta.
“We are not part of that and we do not accept it.
“There is currently a lot of agitation in the Niger Delta. We are Urhobo, as an ethnic nationality in the Niger Delta, we have the Niger Delta interest and we also have the Urhobo interest.
“As the Senator representing the Urhobo nation, my mandate is to protect the Niger Delta interest, which must now be situated within the Urhobo interest.
“The interest has to be in alliance so to speak. Now with this spate of bombings in the Niger Delta, we are not happy with it and we believe that we require dialogue to bring some form of resolution.
“We believe that the President needs to be encouraged. We believe it would create an enabling environment for him to come and develop the region and thus opportunity should be given before they condemn him, as even God does not even condemn without giving somebody a hearing.
“Those who are doing these bombings have their grievances and I believe these grievances could be channelled through proper communication with the Federal Ggovernment and I mean through their elected representatives.”
