The latest review of Hillary Clinton’s emails by the FBI has found no evidence of criminal wrongdoing, says FBI director James Comey.

Mr Comey told Congress on Sunday that, having completed the review, the bureau had not changed the conclusion it came to in July.

The FBI had concluded then that Mrs Clinton was “extremely careless” in handling classified information while Secretary of State, with scores of emails on her private server containing highly classified information.

But the bureau did not recommend criminal charges.

Late last month, Mr Comey said in a letter that agents would be reviewing more emails that may be connected to Mrs Clinton, these ones found on the computer of Anthony Weiner.

Mr Weiner is a disgraced former congressman and the estranged husband of Mrs Clinton’s close aide Huma Abedin.

The messages were discovered after the FBI seized four electronic devices belonging to Ms Abedin and Mr Weiner, the New York Times reported.

At the time, Mr Comey was criticised by many for turning the investigation “into a political football” just 11 days before the 8 November presidential election.

Some commentators described the development as an “almost nightmare scenario” for Mrs Clinton’s campaign.

But late on Sunday, Mr Comey said that the FBI had worked “around the clock to process and review a large number of emails” obtained from the device belonging to Mr Weiner.

He did not say how many emails were looked at – although some reports had said there were 650,000 – nor did he reveal any details about what was found.

A spokesman for Mrs Clinton’s campaign team said they were “glad” that the issue had been “resolved”.

Her press secretary said: “We were always confident nothing would cause the July decision to be revisited.

“Now director Comey has confirmed it.”

Earlier, Mrs Clinton’s Republican rival Donald Trump had used the email investigation to paint her as a candidate who was dishonest and dangerous.

He told a rally in Sioux City, Iowa: “If she were to win, it would create an unprecedented constitutional crisis – we could very well have a sitting President under felony indictment and ultimately a criminal trial.”

After the news that Mrs Clinton would not face charges over the matter, Mr Trump said she was protected by a “rigged system”.
