Eden Hazard will lead a host of Chelsea players who will be looking for revenge against Jose Mourinho when they line up against their former manager on Sunday, according to Paul Merson.
Now the boss of Manchester United, Mourinho struggled to maintain control of his squad last season and was eventually sacked as Chelsea mounted the worst defence of a Premier League title in history.
Mourinho publicly criticised his players at times last season and with Hazard on the end of a few verbal batterings, Merson thinks the attacker will be looking to get one over on his former boss.
‘I tell you one thing though,’ wrote Merson in his Daily Star column.
‘Chelsea’s players will be desperate to win this game.
‘They spent half of last season being hammered every week by Mourinho. They will want to get back at him.
‘You can bet they circled this game when the fixtures came out. And none more so than Eden Hazard.
‘He always seemed to be the one Mourinho singled out. He should be in the top five players in the world for me but he just doesn’t show it enough.
‘If there’s one game where he might, it’s this one. He’ll be bang up for it.’
Another player who clashed with Mourinho last season was Diego Costa and Merson expects the striker to be on a similar path of revenge.
Costa is Chelsea’s top scorer and Merson thinks the Blues would struggle without their main man.
‘And so will Diego Costa,’ he said.
‘He is their matchwinner for me.
‘If anything happened to Costa I think Chelsea might struggle.
‘But right now they are nailed on to finish above United in the table.’
