Members of the Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees from each of the 16 local government areas in Kwara State on Tuesday, staged protests at their respective LG headquarters over salary issues.


The protests, said the Kwara State Secretary, NULGE, Mr. Afolabi Abayomi, took place simultaneously in all the 16 LGs of the state.

He stated that the protests were against the payment of the LG workers’ August salary, out of which only 20 per cent was paid.

Abayomi said, “They protested against the August salary payment. They went to the council chairmen. All the 16 LGs were involved. There were simultaneous demonstrations today at each LG headquarters.”

Meanwhile, there were unconfirmed reports that the protests in Ilorin, the state capital, turned violent as the protesters reportedly vandalised the residence of the Special Adviser on Political Matters to the Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Bibire Ajape.

The workers, who had matched to residence of the Chairman Ilorin-East LG, Mr. Lateef Okandeji, and his Ilorin-South counterpart, Alhaji Usman Adisa- Ebedi, later marched to Ajape’s residence at Okele, Ilorin.

They were said to have been angered by some comments credited to Bibire which they viewed as unpalatable and reportedly destroyed parts of his residence.

The Kwara State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ajayi Okasanmi, said he had not been informed of the reported attack on Ajape’s residence.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Kwara State Governor on Media and Communication, Dr. Muyideen Akorede, also said he was unaware of the reported attack on Ajape’s residence.
