Members of the Consolidation Group in the House of Representatives have applauded the withdrawal of forgery charge against Senate President Bukola Saraki.

The convener of the 140-member group, Zakari Mohammed, urged the Presidency to expedite action on measures that would promote unity among the three arms of government.

He said: “We have been saying that the forgery case is an infringement on the principle of separation of powers and interference by the Executive on what is obviously an internal affair of the Legislature. We believe the Standing Order of the Senate can only be declared forged or genuine by the Senate. And by all actions of the Eighth Senate, its members have no grouse against the 2015 Standing Order.

“The filing of the case is equally bringing the Judiciary to join the fray with the Executive, to interfere with the work of the Legislature. That is why we see the withdrawal of the case as a bold step to restoring constitutionalism and separation of powers.

“We commend the prosecution and the Ministry of Justice for steering the government to do the right thing. At this point, what will give our people confidence and hope that government is serious about tackling the problems posed by economic recession is when all of us in government present a common front and work as a team to proffer solutions.”
