Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has revealed why he sent Luke Shaw home from training ahead of their Europa League match with Zorya Luhansk.
The Red Devils face the Ukrainian side on Thursday, but their England international left-back will be playing no part after falling ill.
‘Ill,’ answered Mourinho when asked about the 21-year-old’s presence, or lack of it.
‘Fever, bad throat. Doctor sent him home this morning. One player like this can affect the others.’
Shaw has had some troubles with Mourinho recently, with the Portuguese singling out the defender’s mistake against Watford this month for causing a goal.
However, it later transpired that the former Southampton ace was playing with an injury when he made the error, reportedly leaving teammates shocked at the criticism.
In other team news ahead of United’s clash with Zorya, Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been ruled out through injury, while Anthony Martial is back in contention after recovering from his own ankle/calf problem.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic is set to start the encounter, with the Red Devils looking to bounce back from their 1-0 defeat to Feyenoord in the opening group stage game.
That game saw a relatively strong line-up named by Mourinho, and he may choose to do so again with struggling Stoke City their fixture on the weekend.
