He hasn’t put on a Manchester United shirt in well over a year, but Robin van Persie is still winning awards with his former club.

The 33-year-old, who currently plays for Fenerbahce, spent just two seasons at United but won the Premier League title in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final year in charge.

On Wednesday evening, Van Persie was among those who attended the Legends of Football awards ceremony which celebrated the 25 players who have scored 100 or more goals in the Premier League.

And the striker won the award for scoring the best goal of any player with 100+ Premier League goals with his stunning volley against Aston Villa.

Alan Shearer came in second place with his strike for Newcastle United against Everton.

Paul Scholes was in third place with his superb volley for Manchester United against Aston Villa.

“I chose that goal because it was the first title I won and it was a huge moment for Manchester United,” said Van Persie.

“On a goal like that you don’t really think about it. You just want to make the most of it and see what happens. But you need a bit of luck as well.

“What I like about that goal is the whole story that was behind it.”
