Some Liverpool fans were rather excited to see Steven Gerrard posting what looked very much like a farewell message to his current club LA Galaxy on Instagram.
However, Reds supporters will be disappointed to hear that things look to have been taken horribly out of context, with many on this side of the pond unaware of the MLS side hosting a fan appreciation night.
A number of Galaxy players took to social media to post similar messages, so think how some of their fans must have felt when it suddenly looked like the entire squad was on its way out!
Gerrard wrote: ‘Living in Los Angeles and playing for the great Galaxy supporters has been a privilege. You have made this place feel like home to me. This city and this club will always hold a special place in my heart. Thank you.’
Some tweeters who follow the club more closely have now moved to clarify the reason for such messages from the former Liverpool captain, and from others.
It has long been rumoured that Gerrard could return to Anfield at some point in the future, most likely in a coaching capacity once his playing days are over.
However, that plan will have to be put on hold for a little longer, it would seem, as his appreciation of LA Galaxy fans caused some Liverpool fans to think he was already on his way back.
