    Reps seek life imprisonment for terrorists, sponsors

    It was gathered that the House of Representatives moved on Tuesday to prescribe tougher penalties for terrorism, including “a maximum of life imprisonment.”

    A person, who facilitates the escape of a suspect held for an act of terrorism also faces a life prison sentence.

    Sponsors of terrorism face the penalty of life imprisonment as those who commit the act itself.

    Under the new law in view, planning a terror act is punishable even when the act is not committed eventually.

    A 23-year-old unemployed man, Omodolapo IyanuOluwa, was on Monday sentenced to six months imprisonment by an Osogbo Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing an Infinix phone.

    The Magistrate, Mr Olusola Aluko, ordered that the convict be locked in Ilesa prison after he pleaded guilty to a three-count-charge bordering on stealing.

    Aluko said he hoped the sentence would serve as deterrent to others intending to commit such crime.

    Outgoing Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, Friday marked his last days in office by commuting four death row inmates to life imprisonment.

     

    The inmates whose names were not made available as at press time had served over 25 years waiting for the hangman.

    A Kano Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday sentenced an 18-year-old man, Gaddafi Abdullahi, to six months imprisonment without an option of fine, for stealing N5,000.
