Nigerian police have freed 14 kidnapped oil workers in the restive southern Niger Delta region, which has been hit by a series of militant attacks on oil and gas facilities, police said on Sunday.

Five out of the 14 kidnapped oil workers have escaped from their captors after spending two weeks in captivity.
Gunmen had on September 2, 2016, seized 14 oil workers, who are employees of Port Harcourt-based Nestoil Plc.
It was gathered that two of the oil workers escaped from their captors on Thursday before three others regained their freedom at about 9am on Saturday.

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has urged the Federal Government to give adequate protection to oil workers returning from the field to prevent being kidnapped.
The President of NUPENG, Mr Igwe Achese, made the plea on Monday in Lagos.

The Rivers State Police Command said on Saturday that its men were closing in on the kidnappers of 14 oil workers in the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of the state.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu, has assured Nigerians that all issues raised by oil workers’ unions would be addressed to ensure sanity in the industry.
