    Smugglers kill 70 Customs officers in 2016, says Hameed Ali

    According to reports, the Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Col. Hameed Ali (rtd), has disclosed that the service has lost 70 officers to smugglers this year.

    Ali said this when members of Rice Millers Association of Nigeria visited on Wednesday in Abuja.

    He said the biggest problem Customs had was the issue of smuggling. According to him, rice smuggling is counterproductive to health, adding that the life span of rice is two years.

    Customs arraigns two alleged notorious smugglers

    According to reports, the Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit (FOU), Zone ‘A’ has arraigned two alleged notorious smugglers in Lagos.

    The suspects, Mr. Oyedeji Rashidi and Mr. Shuaib Sheyi were yesterday arraigned at the Magistrate’s Court, Ikeja, Lagos State on a nine-count charge of smuggling prohibited items.

    The two suspects, according to Customs spokesman at the FOU, Jerry Attah, have been remanded in Ikoyi Prison on awaiting trial list as the case was adjourned to February 15, 2017.

    A clash among Customs men, police and smugglers has claimed three lives at Alakuko area of Agege in Lagos yesterday.

    Some Customs officers from the Federal Operations Unit (FOU) were chasing suspected smugglers conveying rice.  They allegedly shot at the vehicle, killing three persons.

    Policemen from the Alakuko Division, who tried to arrest the Customs officers were unsuccessful as the latter shot their way to escape.

    The Customs Area Controller, Ogun Area Command, Comptroller Waindu Multafu, has warned that any attempt by smugglers to obstruct the activities of the service will be met with resistance.
