    Rice producers raise alarm over increased smuggling

    Rice Processors Association of Nigeria (RIPAN) has raised alarm over the massive smuggling of finished rice into the country from the Republic of Benin, Niger and Cameroon.

    They alleged that their investigation have shown that the product are berthed and warehoused in the countries at very little import duties and then pushed into the Nigerian markets where they sell at exhorbitant rate.

    Nigeria may close its borders with Benin Republic to stem smuggling of rice and other consumables as well as the illegal importation of weapons into the country.

    Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, who expressed government’s displeasure over the porosity of the Seme border, said, it has rubbished efforts of the present administration in diversifying the economy, especially, through agriculture.     NCS adopts new approach to check smuggling

    It was gathered that the Sokoto State Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), has adopted a community based approach to check the activities of smugglers in the area.

    Alhaji Sani Madugu, the NCS Comptroller in charge of Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara States, made this disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Sokoto.

    Chinese man nabbed for smuggling materials used for explosives in Ogun

    A Chinese national, Zhao Chum, and his Nigerian accomplice, Christian Ohia, have been arrested for allegedly smuggling into Nigeria, unregistered and controlled chemicals used for manufacturing explosives.

    Chum, 33, who owns a furniture company in Ogun State, was apprehended by officials of the National Agency for Food, Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC on Thursday.

    Police successfully caught fishermen who were attempting to smuggle 370 iPhone 6S phones, estimated to cost worth around two million yuan (£228,000), hidden in buckets with fish placed on top, into China.

    According to reports, this is the first time that smugglers have used this method.
