    Delta government stops payment of WASSCE fees for students

    It was gathered that the Delta State Government has announced its decision to discontinue the payment of examination fees for its students preparing for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

    It said henceforth, each candidate will have to bear the responsibility of paying the enrollment fees instead of the state government bankrolling everything for all the students as introduced by the immediate past administration.

    Twelve states currently owe the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) about N2 billion exam fees for the May/June 2016 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) Daily Sun has learnt.

    Lagos records 50.4 per cent in WASSCE

    It was gathered that the Lagos State Government said its investment in education has yielded dividend as the state’s public schools recorded a 50.41 per cent pass in the 2016 result of the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate.

    According to reports, the National Examination Council (NECO) on Friday released the 2016 June/July Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) results with 88.51 per cent of the candidates obtaining five credits pass and above in English Language and Mathematics.

    Announcing the release of the results at the body’s headquarter in Minna, the NECO Registrar, Prof. Charles Uwakwe, said there is a one per cent increase in the general performance of candidates this year compared with 2015.

    Details of the May/June 2015 West African Senior School Certificate Examination emerged on Thursday with states in the South-East, again, leading in the performance chart of candidates who obtained credits in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

    Abia State topped the chart with 33, 762 of its 52, 801 candidates.
