Christian Eriksen has admitted he thought he’d fail at Chelsea, if he chose to join them rather than Ajax as a 16-year-old.

The Dane has been a major hit at White Hart Lane since joining from the Dutch giants in 2013 and is a regular feature in Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

But his career could have panned out very differently had he opted to move to Stamford Bridge as a teenager.

The Demark international, now 24, rejected a host of clubs including Chelsea, Barcelona and AC Milan to join Ajax.

Eriksen believes the way Ajax nurture young players and give them regular first-team opportunities contributes to their success.

And he suspects his life as a footballer could have followed a vastly different path had he joined Chelsea instead.

‘In Denmark, you are sure to play if you were good, but Ajax played you if you did not have the mentality and went 100% to it.

‘It did not matter who you were. It was about getting better every day.

‘If I had chosen Chelsea, then my situation today would be completely different. I’m sure.

‘Of course, you never say never, because I would have been 100% into it, if I had chosen it

‘I just felt that there was more chance to fail than succeed.’
