Fury posted a message on Twitter at lunchtime on Monday, saying: “Boxing is the saddest thing I ever took part in, all a pile of s***, I’m the greatest and I’m also retired.”

But just a couple of hours later he posted: “Hahahaha u think you will get rid of the GYPSYKING that easy!!! I’m here to stay. #TheGreatest just shows u what the Medea [sic] are like. Tut tut.”

The world heavyweight champion has not fought since taking Wladimir Klitschko’s IBF, WBA and WBO belts with a stunning victory in Germany in November last year.

A rematch has twice been postponed, the IBF title has been stripped and the remaining governing bodies are considering following suit in the wake of his latest withdrawal and allegations about his Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) conducted test.

Fury is unbeaten, having won all 25 of his professional contests, with 18 stoppages.

The 28-year-old won the British, Commonwealth and European titles on his way to a shot at the younger Klitschko, who went into their fight unbeaten in 11 years.

Fury travelled to the champion’s adopted home in Germany and won a unanimous decision with a dominant performance.

A rematch was initially booked for the summer only for Fury to pull out with an ankle injury, and the rescheduled October 29 date was called off with the champ “medically unfit to fight”.

Fury’s trainer and uncle Peter Fury later opened up to Sky Sports about his nephew’s problems and said the fighter would recover and return to the ring.
