Former Barcelona defender Eric Abidal has given a brutal assessment of Manchester United’s performance in the 2011 Champions League final between the two clubs.

Abidal’s Barca side were at their peak under Pep Guardiola at the time, and thoroughly outplayed United to win 3-1 at Wembley, lifting the trophy at the expense of the Red Devils for the second time in three seasons.

Speaking now in a new book about Andres Iniesta, Abidal recalls how the Spanish midfield maestro was on top form to help Barcelona beat United that evening.

In what will make painful reading for United fans, the former France international makes it clear quite how easy his side were finding it, and how the quality of their football beat their opponents both physically and mentally.

‘The thing I remember most about that final is the last half an hour,’ Abidal said.

‘The English players were angry, really furious, because we had turned Wembley into a huge rondo and there was nothing they could do about it.

‘They kept swearing, shouting everything under the sun. It was incredible. Some of my team-mates couldn’t understand them, but I could. “That’s enough, stop f**cking about. We’re dead. And there are still twenty-five minutes left!”
