Paul Pogba must stop trying to play as though he’s Lionel Messi and do what he’s best at, Paul Scholes has advised the Manchester United midfielder.

The world’s most expensive player endured a torrid night in Manchester United’s 1-0 Europa League defeat to Feyenoord.

Playing in a more advanced role than he has done so far this season, Pogba was constantly dispossessed, passed the ball waywardly and was often out of position.

Speaking on BT Sport after the match, Scholes said: ‘Tonight wasn’t his best performance. I think it will come though. It’s still very early days.

‘I don’t really know what position he’s playing. He seems to be a little bit all over the place at times.

‘I really think he’s trying to do too much on the ball. He’s trying to beat three, four players a lot of the time, he’s running with the ball.’

Scholes, arguably Manchester United’s greatest ever midfielder, went on to offer some advice to the young Frenchman.

‘Just keep it simple for now. Just ease your way in.

‘That’s not the player Manchester United bought. They didn’t buy a Lionel Messi to beat five players and then go and stick it in the top corner all the time.

‘They bought a powerful, strong midfield player who can take the ball. He’s got skill, he can pass it forward, he can run. If he just takes one, two touches and sticks the ball into Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] and runs nobody can live with that. He’s got so much pace and so much power. It’ll come. I think Mourinho will find the right partners for him.’
