Cristiano Ronaldo was substituted early in Real Madrid’s draw with Las Palmas as he needs to be rested for Tuesday’s clash with Borussia Dortmund, according to Zinedine Zidane.

The Portugal international, who has scored two goals in four appearances this season, was replaced by Lucas Vazquez after just 72 minutes on Saturday.

Ronaldo looked unhappy with Zidane’s decision as he walked off the pitch and was glaring at the Madrid manager as he sat on the bench.

But Zidane insists he wants the 31-year-old fresh for their Champions League fixture against Dortmund.

‘It was not that [Ronaldo] was playing badly,’ explained Zidane.

‘We are playing on Tuesday and Cristiano must rest too sometimes. It was just for that. He was playing well. Tonight I took him off thinking of Tuesday’s game.

‘Angry? That would be your interpretation. He always wants to be on the pitch. We have to take him out sometimes, and we did today. It does not change anything.’

Madrid were winning 2-1 by the time Ronaldo was brought off but Las Palmas struck with five minutes to go to rescue a point.
